Microdermabrasion: Beauty’s Secret Weapon

Who doesn’t like the feel of freshly cleansed skin? A customized facial that includes microdermabrasion leaves your skin feeling silky smooth, with a dewy glow that lasts for days.

Microdermabrasion is a safe and effective way to smooth fine lines and wrinkles, treat mild acne, and reduce the appearance of fine scars. Women and men with enlarged pores and hyperpigmentation also benefit from the procedure.

Microdermabrasion has been in common practice for about 10 years, and is steadily gaining popularity because of its effectiveness.

To get started, we recommend scheduling a six-session series, followed by monthly facial treatments that include microdermabrasion. The intensity of the six-session series ensures you’ll enjoy softer, supple, younger-looking skin, month after month, year after year.

Microdermabrasion FAQ

Q. What is microdermabrasion?
A. It is an advanced mineral crystal peeling system that falls between glycolic peels and procedures like laser resurfacing.

Q. How does microdermabrasion work?
A. It exfoliates the skin much in the way you’d use a facial scrub. The crystals are able to detach and remove the cells of the top layer of skin in a non-traumatic way Microdermabrasion works like a two-headed vacuum pump. One circulates the fresh crystals; at the same time, the second head removes the used crystals and dead skin. It is like a mini sandblasting of the skin.

Q. Can microdermabrasion be used with other treatments?
A. The procedure is not recommended for clients who have active acne lesions, or are using Retin-A, Renova, Tetracycline, Accutane, or are undergoing laser peels. If you are undergoing any of these treatments, consult with your physician before seeking microdermabrasion.

Q. Is it safe?
A. This is a gradual and controlled abrasive procedure. It is a safe, gentle, and sterile treatment.

Q. Does it hurt?
A. There might be slight discomfort during the treatment. If so, tell your esthetician. The machine setting can be adjusted. However, microdermabrasion can cause mild skin irritation when you first get started.

Q. How many treatments do I need before I see results?
A. Results are immediately visible after just one session. However, additional sessions may be recommended. This is based on your skin type, its overall condition, and what results you are trying to achieve. Generally, the series begins with weekly or bi-weekly sessions over the course of 60 days. After that, a monthly follow-up – which includes a soothing facial – will maintain results.

Q. Are there any side effects to microdermabrasion?
A. Following treatment, there is a slight risk for redness, peeling, and some “striping” of the skin. However, this is a normal reaction, and should ease within two days. After-treatment skin care is critical; your esthetician will give you a customized home-treatment plan. It is very important that you follow her instructions.

Q. What does after-care consist of?
A. For best results, speak with your esthetician. You’ll get a home-care program tailored specifically to your needs. It is critical that you use a sunscreen with a minimum of SPF15. This must be liberally applied every day – even if you are staying indoors. Finally, no sun exposure or tanning bed can be used before or after treatment.

Q. Do I need a consultation?
A. It’s always a good idea to meet with the esthetician before scheduling a microdermabrasion series. A facial treatment is a great way to prepare your face for the treatment; plus it gives you a chance to learn more about the procedure and what to expect. Schedule a consultation.
